To celebrate the 50th anniversary next year, the BFI have announced monthly screenings of Doctor Who!

Susan and her Grandfather. But who is he?

Susan and her Grandfather. But who is he?

Curated by Dick Fiddy and Justin Johnson, the BFI will screen one serial per Doctor, starting with, naturally, An Unearthly Child, with the wonderful William Hartnell as the first Doctor. BFI writes:

Hartnell created the role of the time- travelling adventurer known only as The Doctor when the show first materialised in 1963. In this opening story we are introduced to the fantastic time machine – The TARDIS – and to the first of the Doctor’s human companions, Ian and Barbara, as they unwittingly find themselves whisked out of their time period and stranded in the far-distant Earth past.

The monthly shows will culminate in November, when they’re expected to show the 50th anniversary special on the big screen.

Though guests are still to be confirmed for the event, tickets to see An Unearthly Child go on sale at 11.30 am on Tuesday 11th December. The very first Doctor Who story will be shown at 3.30pm on Saturday 12th January 2013 at the BFI Southbank, a cinema that can hold up to 450 audience members.

Bleeding Cool says:

I expect a complete and total sell-out and a brilliantly excited crowd.

Any guesses as to future screenings? Tomb of the Cybermen maybe? How about The Ark in Space? Is The Caves of Androzani a cert?
